When resilience meets creativity, extraordinary things can happen. Just ask Julieta Fumberg, the multi-disciplinary visual artist who turned her passion into a thriving business at the spry age of 21. Join us as I, Veronica Edwards, sit down with the Asheville River Art District's shining star to unravel the threads of her artistic journey from Argentina to entrepreneurship. Hear how Julieta's evolution is woven into her brand's identity, pushing boundaries and redefining what it means to be more than a job title. Her story illuminates the power of authenticity and the art of blending graphic design, web development, photography, and painting into a symphony of visual storytelling.

The tapestry of life is rich with the contrasting threads of chaos and peace, and it's this very interplay that takes center stage in my upcoming solo exhibit, "Chaos and Peace, Beauty in Both." Through the lens of my transformation, from the grip of self-doubt to a place of empowerment, this episode offers a heartfelt narrative on the importance of showing up and embracing change. As Julieta shares her own experiences from the unpredictable waves of 2020 and 2021, we celebrate the beauty of consistency in creativity and the courage to find balance amidst life's storms. Her insight reminds us that whether in art or life, being present is the key to catching the opportunities that might otherwise drift away.

Veronica:

Welcome to the Veronica Edwards Show where we have fun financial conversations that everyone listening can apply to their personal and professional life. I'm your host, veronica Edwards, and I'm so excited to be back with my new microphone that's making its first appearance today on this show. So again I want to thank the V Team for downloading the podcast at VeronicaEdwardsBuzzSproutcom listening live. Here at bizradious. We are creepy up to 4,000 downloads before season 4 and today's guest might help me get closer to that goal, because she has a huge following and is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based right here in the River Art District in Western North Carolina, in Asheville. So always a friend to the show and the station. Ms Julietta Thunberg, welcome back.

Julieta :

Thanks, veronica, for having me back. I'm always excited to have a conversation with you in the world.

Veronica:

I'm always happy to have you and listeners if you are true V Teamers, meaning you've been listening since season 1. I've stopped counting, julia, how many times you've been on the show. I mean at least a half a dozen. Julietta is my go-to. Yes, I loved having her on for her to tell me what's going on, but also if I'm in a pinch and I'm like Julietta, I don't have a guest, can you come on tomorrow? I don't know what we're going to talk about. You're always like, yep, no problem.

Julieta :

Sure, yeah, I always, and I always like to support anybody that I can. But, like I was telling you offline, you're my number one fan, so I will be here whenever you need me to be.

Veronica:

Yes, absolutely so. For those that have not listened to all the prior episodes and all the background with you, can you just give us a quick little recap of who you are, where you're from, what led you to entrepreneurship, and especially here in western North Carolina?

Julieta :

Absolutely so. Again, my name is Julietta Thunberg. I'm not from the state. I was born and raised in Argentina and I moved to the states when I was a teenager. I lived in South Florida, just a very blip in time in South Carolina and then here in western North Carolina. I've been a business owner since I was 21. I've had a firm since I was 21. I know it's been a roller coaster, but I'm still here and, honestly, after surviving a pandemic as a business it actually empowered me to do I can do anything right, right now I can do anything, it doesn't matter.

Julieta :

So I do all things graphics, from branding to web development, to professional photography and to contemporary art. So I'm a painter as well. But that's me in a nutshell. But I've been a business owner forever because I do not want to give my time to somebody else. I love that about you. I love that about you and even during the pandemic and different things.

Veronica:

I know there were times where we all had to pick up additional streams of income, but you were always so true, even when other things came up, where you I mean we had no choice. We had to supplement our income when things got tight. You stayed true to your brand and I love that about you because you've always said you know this is who I am. It's not just your job, it's your lifestyle. Being this multi disciplinary visual artist which I love because it's very motivating, infectious I feel like I feel lazy when I'm around you. I'm like I'm only in an accountant. You do all. You do all these things. So tell us about your business. You're always rebranding, so the business name currently is just Julietta Fumber, correct? It's you, yes, which is out of giggling.

Julieta :

Yeah, go ahead. I've come to the conclusion that there's no point to anything else like if you know me, you'll know what I do. I know that's right and that's how it should be Like.

Veronica:

You are your brand and, even though it's your name, I want to talk about that a little bit, because you've revamped your brand multiple times, just since I've known you the last five, six years. Because, for those that haven't listened to prior shows, julieta was one of the first people when I started my business six years ago that I bumped into literally bumped into At a networking event and Julieta helped me with my headshots and my website and my logo and all the things, helped me get one of my first clients, allison Pages. So all of this, thank you. That's why I'm a Phantom. Thank you, thank you, thank you. But I definitely want you to talk about your business and what services you're providing, how we can support you.

Julieta :

Yeah, so although I rebranded a couple of times, it's mainly for personal reasons, because I evolved as a human and how I see myself as I grow, how I Can call myself and again, it's hard sometimes because I do so many things. So, you can, I don't really fit in one given box. I'm not just a designer, I'm not just a photographer, I'm not just a painter. I'm all of the things and more, because my personality gives for a lot more and the fact that I've been in business for so long. You know, I coach people in how they want to do their business and so I've rebranded, although staying within the essence Slightly, as I was evolving as a person.

Julieta :

Because, my brand is me. So and I always advise that to people like you as long as you let people know what you're doing, you can totally evolve with it. That's how even big brands do that. You know they're logos, people, and changing throughout time. They do slightly changes, like mine. Mine was, I won't point Julieta Fomberg studio and then he went into Julieta Fomberg creative and they're like you know what? I'm just Julieta Fomberg, I got it. Hey, there's nobody else like me and it's totally fine. And Again, when, like in my business card was funny, I just send a new batch of business cards to be printed and every time I have to print more, I take the time to Revise and redo because I can and I'm like what, what do I want to show for? So I added to, like the list of things. Let me pull it up because he was very funny.

Veronica:

Um it was.

Julieta :

So I had in the back writing the front he has my information and in the back I had photography and videography, graphic and web design and contemporary art. And then I added to the top because I found it very interesting. I was in a, an event and I'm like I'm a visual storyteller, so I added that to the list of things just so people kind of that helps people understand what it is that I do as a service for anybody. So I helped you tell your story through graphics and video, pretty much because I had a video, by the way, because I'm having so much fun doing video for clients, so, um, it's one of those things that I help you tell your story through. Whatever and all the things that I can make for you between a logo, a graphic, a photo, a video and all that just brings it all together to how you present yourself in the world make sense.

Veronica:

I had total sense and just hearing you talking about you are your brand. That is so true. And for small business owners that are listening, I think sometimes people get so caught up on oh, it has to be perfect before I can launch anything. It can continue to evolve exactly. It's just like being in a relationship. You know, this year I'll be celebrating 15 years being married. Yes, and we've evolved like we're not the same people we were when we were 27 years old. You know 26 when we got married and you shouldn't expect people to not evolve same way as your business. So, for those that are listening, definitely take the advice of our experts. Another thing you could call yourself as a brand strategist is that you want to make sure your business stays fresh, and branding is huge.

Julieta :

So, julia, please, and I'm going to cut you there and staying authentic. I know that that word gets thrown around a lot, but the that's the example. What I've been doing for many years is the example of being authentic. As I change my business changes with me, very healthy and very like oh well, you know I want to do this and it's okay if I want to do this. Again, it's just how you communicate it with the people that follow you and just saying, well, if you want, we can do this. And I've done some other services throughout the years that I just didn't care for, Like I was doing them and they weren't making me happy, so I stopped offering them as a general service. So, and it's a you don't have to do what everybody else is doing Absolutely not. That's not going to get you anywhere. That's a very quick solution to and not like it's not sustainable to keep up, you know, a face for forever, because that's not you and people are going to see that there's something weird about about your brand. I agree.

Veronica:

No, that was. That was head on, and you know we're all about different tips and jewels. That's a great tip because I think about it in like the with my husband being a singer. In the music world I hear a lot of artists saying I don't listen to the radio you know like, or I listen to things that I like that might be 1520 years old, because they want to stay fresh, they want to stay authentic to themselves. They don't want to just get on whatever the latest gimmick is. Let me go ahead and do this type of genre of music, and it's the same with your business. It's very easy and tempting to be like oh, this is working, let me try to do this. Everybody's doing this particular thing. I should too. Well, if it makes sense for your business, and I think you've been very intentional on how you have changed as you've evolved and I've again, I'm a fan and I think you've done a very good job with that. Thank you.

Julieta :

Yeah, I do try to be true to myself and honestly, I don't care what people think or what people say. My true followers and my true people that want to do things with me, they love that about me and they love that I can do that for them too, as they grow, because they are noticing that that's like a true nature of being human. We are human first and foremost. Then we create businesses and we think that money's real and all that crap that we put up with, but we are human and we're just having a human experience and that's really something that it stays very present with me every day, and mainly when I stress on it, I'm like why am I stressing out? We're floating on a rock in the middle of nothingness. There's no point in stressing out. That's something that I want to talk about with my friends.

Julieta :

I like floating in a rock in the middle of nothingness. Yeah, it's why am I stressing for so? Yeah, I just try to stay very human to everything that I do. And again, my business is what I. It was what I did before. It was a business so Kind of you know. That's why we'll always do this, I think, until I die.

Veronica:

Yes, well, this show is gonna air the end of black history month, the end of February, and I definitely wanted you to share some of the highs and the lows that took place in 2023, because a lot of times, we always talk about all the good stuff and it is good to be positive, but I also, on the show, like to share with listeners like the real side of entrepreneurship. So I would love, with you, having over 20 years of experience, if you can say, even in year 20, something plus, there are still some challenges. So what would you say were the biggest takeaways for you, for Julietta Fumber, in 2023?

Julieta :

So, yeah, absolutely, there's always challenges by being a business owner. 2022 was way better than 2022. 2022 suck balls. Oh yeah, 2023 was a more consistent year and it was funny because I changed my mind, my mindset, from having a pity party. From 2020, you actually like saying you know, stop it, you're doing it to yourself. Um, so, because there's a lot of people that that thrive through 2020 and 2021 and still like they build multi-million dollar businesses, I'm like, what am I not doing that?

Julieta :

I realized that it was me being like well, you know I love so much and then eventually I got over that and 2023 was better for it. Um, I think that every month was great. It said for August. For some reason, August sucked and um, but I learned how to chest again.

Julieta :

Not stress about it, I'm like I'll be fine, I'm just going to keep showing up to my studio, do my thing and everything is going to work out. So I've learned for sure, in the next I want to say two years at least to chest. It is what it is. I'm doing the best I can and can I do something else? Today Only if I have energy. If not, I can totally go and go to sleep and tomorrow will be another day and another opportunity.

Julieta :

So I, yeah, I've learned how to just, you know, let it be. And that doesn't mean like I'm just going to sit in my couch and watch movies and, of course, and no right, that means that I'm going to show up to my studio and still do things, because I'm supposed to be creating yes, Even if it's for a client or not, like that's what I do. So when I don't create, I consume, and when I consume, I'm not really moving any good energy towards my business at all. So I try to make an effort to, even in the weeks that are not best or you know, they're just normal or whatever, there's not enough movement. I try to create the movement in my studio somewhat. So, yeah, the biggest lesson I learned, I want to say, is just to let it be and keep on creating, no matter what the bank account says or whatever. You know if I'm getting emails or inquiries or not, or you know what I mean it's showing up for it anyways.

Veronica:

Yeah, I think you're all telling me to have a more balanced and yeah, more balanced and less stressful life. No, that's wonderful. You mentioned a few times in your studio and I know this opening reception of chaos and peace, beauty in both. Can you tell us what exactly is that, that you have this reception that's coming up and how we can support you?

Julieta :

Sure, the opening reception. It's March 9th, from 5 to 7 pm. It's the gallery. It's right outside my studio in the PingDoc Creative Building at the 348, supporting by either showing up and sharing that night with me, which is going to be great with a lot of work, because I'm putting out all the big pieces out there. So I'm so excited. And if you can't make it for some reason, either share the event I posted on Facebook or come to visit me any other time. I mean, the show is going to be up for two months, but I really want to celebrate on March 9th, since it's going to be my biggest solo exhibit yet, so I'm excited for it.

Veronica:

Wow, congratulations, friend. That's big. And how did you decide on this chaos and peace?

Julieta :

Because a lot of my paintings are very, have a lot of contrast and we need, normally, contrast in life to live. We appreciate peace because we have chaos. You can see the light because you have darkness and all this stuff and my paintings feel that way a lot, too a lot of times, because they're, they give me a lot of peace, although they look very chaotic, crazy to be like, oh, that's so peaceful and they're like what?

Julieta :

So it's, you know how I feel about them, how a lot of people feel about them, between having a lot of contrast and then creating peacefulness out of that. But yeah, it's kind of a celebration of how the opposites create that balance. You know, in life so, and again because of COVID or in the pandemic, I sat down and thought about a whole bunch of things that I want to do different, and you know, there's always that something that is not in the light side that pushes you to, you know, do better, or be better, or wanting to do things. So that's how I think that everything goes around, that even my paintings.

Veronica:

So yeah, so well said.

Veronica:

And we're almost to the end of the show and we always ask the guests to give different tips and jewel solicitors, but you gave so many already.

Veronica:

Juliet, I just want to emphasize you know I was going to say what advice do you have for the young starving artists and you've been in business over 20 years and correct me if I'm wrong staying true to yourself, consistency and positive mindset, because I think with that positive mindset I'm sorry. And showing up, and showing up, that's huge. I definitely do want to talk about that for the last minute or two on the show, because there's so many times I think people don't realize you just have to show up and things can happen. But if you're, you know, making excuses, I don't feel like getting out of the bed, or it's raining or it's cold. It's like someone else is going to show up and you're going to miss that opportunity. So I'm so glad that you said that, because you can be positive and you can say true to yourself and you can be consistent in other things. But if you're not showing up, then what's the point of doing any of this?

Julieta :

There's yeah, and that's kind of it like as I show up to my studio funny story. When I met you, remember, I told you I was taking it up and I actually doubted showing up to that event. Yes, remember, I'm like no, no, no, I gotta go, because I push myself, even in times that I don't, I'm not feeling it. Yep, because I know that's where opportunities live, so you live to Find the opportunities. Everything else comes together after that. I'm not ever Looking for the money, I'm looking for the opportunities and then the money comes after, because opportunities create, you know, open all the doors that you need. But showing up is A big part of that. That's why people know me, because I'm like, oh yeah, I said in that thing, oh yeah, and I don't always want to.

Veronica:

But you know.

Julieta :

But I know that it's important for me to show up People.

Veronica:

You're doing an amazing job of that. You inspired me. I'm always like, let me do about three or four or five more things, because I'm just looking at what julietta's doing and you know, gotta shout out, mommy, she's always like what's my julietta doing? That girl's always Doing things. Yeah, people notice and even though, as we know, on social media, not everybody's always liking and making comments, but you have a huge presence in the community physically and also, if not even more, online, which a lot of times people don't do that well. So again, it comes back to you just being true to yourself and being consistent and hey, this is the reason why you're still in business. Once that I want to add when I did my monologue um a few weeks back, is that I want to say once you get over 15 years in business, julietta, only 25 of businesses last.

Veronica:

You know so you are part of this elite group that I'm trying to be. One day I just hit the over 5% mark and they say usually 50% of businesses fail after Five years and then, once you get past 10, it's like, oh, now 65 of them fail. So you know, we're starting to be these dinosaurs. So I take pride in the fact that you're still standing, however it might look in different seasons of your business. But I just want to say I'm very proud of you and I'm honored to be your friend and that you've helped me with my business six years ago.

Veronica:

So I just want to always formally thank you for that and, if you can, let the listeners know how we can follow you, support you. All that good stuff.

Julieta :

So you can follow me by, of course, finding me online. I'm always Pressing there, under julietta fomberg, I have my business page or my personal On instagram, facebook, you know all the above, my website. So I split my websites into three. So, julietta fomberg, it's always going to be then my, my main jam. That's where I have my art. Um, that does take you to the other two. The other two are julietta fomberg designcom. It's where you will find branding and web development and graphics and business and business coaching and all that stuff. And then, um, julietta fomberg photography dot com for my photography and videography. So, um, find me, see my beautiful work, see if we can work together. Um, and kind of join me.
