Veronica:

Welcome to the Veronica Edwards show where we have fun financial conversations that everyone listening can apply to their personal and professional life. I'm your host, Veronica Edwards, and it is the season year and wrap up episode for season three on bizradious, so always want to thank the V team for downloading the podcast. Our goal every season is just another thousand downloads. So we were really shooting to go over and beyond and say, hey, let's hit 4,000 downloads before season four and we hit that goal already. So thank you, thank you, thank you to everybody that has been supporting the show for the last three years and going into season four, we're going to push for over 5,000 downloads, which we're already less than I think 800, I think we're like 700 downloads away. It's crazy.

Veronica:

So today's guest is the brand ambassador of the Veronica Edwards Show and we've made it a tradition that now this young lady is always going to do the year-end wrap-up with me because she is responsible for creating all the amazing social media for the show. She's also helped me this year introduce a monthly newsletter that encompasses the radio show. My business just me personally called Veronica's View. So if anybody is looking for any type of digital services for their business marketing wise, or even if they're venturing on writing a book or performing. She does it all.

Veronica:

So, without further ado, I'd like to introduce Drew's mama, Ms Jylan Barr.

Jhylin :

Girl, you about to be a mama, I'm about to be a mama.

Veronica:

How are you so much has changed in a year, huh. A lot happened in a year girl, so typically, when we have folks on the show that never been, we say, hey, tell us about you, how you started your business. We're dead and all that. Jylan is not just a friend. This is home for her. So I'm more curious for you to share with folks. What have you been doing the last nine months? The last year you're a year older. Tell us about the world of Ms Jylan Farr. The last year you're a year older.

Jhylin :

Tell us about the world of Ms Jylan Farr. The last nine months I've just been a walking incubator. You know, which has been an adventure in itself.

Veronica:

Oh, jylan, keep it real, girl, for those that are listening, you're 26 years old, you're about to have your first baby. I mean, just four years ago, we were celebrating you graduating from college, which within a pandemic right. So, girl, what are you feeling like? Are you freaking out? Are you feeling like, oh my goodness, oh my goodness.

Jhylin :

They laugh at me all the time because I say oh my gosh, I'm about to have a kid, nobody panic. Um, they laugh and they're like um, I think you're the only one panicking. So, yes, yes, I am panicking on the inside, like what?

Veronica:

in the world.

Jhylin :

What am I doing? When did this happen? Is this a dream?

Veronica:

Girl.

Jhylin :

We all are.

Veronica:

I was going to say just so you know, regardless, if you're 26, 36, 56, we're always like what? I'm not ready, what am I going to do? It's everybody's first time.

Jhylin :

I was just talking with my eye and I was like I mean, I'm grown and I'm self-sufficient, but when it was time to tell my mom I was like 15 all over again. I was terrified.

Veronica:

Yes, shout out to your mom, ebony Sullivan, coo of Cassie Electric, also my co-host for small biz chats that we do almost monthly. Now it's supposed to be quarterly and your mom had you when she was 19 years old, so your mommy is going to be a young grandma who wants to be called lovey child.

Jhylin :

Yes, she's a lovey. She said all that other stuff is for old ladies child.

Veronica:

Yes, she's a lovey. She said all that other stuff is for old ladies. I love it. It's the new thing. I've heard people call themselves Coco lovey, all the things. So I'm excited for you. So this is right on time because V Team, we're going to be on break, so we'll have best of shows in the month of August. This show is going to air, I think, the last week of July and then Jylan will have her bundle of joy. Hopefully she makes it to September, but I'm taking bets that she might have a baby in three weeks. We've already celebrated Jylan with a baby shower at the beginning of July and I'm sure there's going to be more to come and you deserve all of it. So definitely keep your feet up and enjoy. Jylan has some interns, that's going to help. So we're trying to put out as much content as possible so we can prepare. So let's talk about season three, girl.

Jhylin :

Didn't we show up and show out? Yo V Team showed up and show out. I want to applaud team showed up and show out. I want to applaud yes, yes, we got all the downloads. You guys show up and listen and I think that is just so wonderful, thank you guys.

Veronica:

Yes, I mean I can't believe I was telling jylan before we came on. Like man, I had to go back and see what shows we had on season three, because we start the season typically in August, september and then we wrap up usually end of June and in July, just depends on the production schedule. So, season three we actually had our first episode August the 2nd and it was a summer checklist and it was our CPA chat. So, jyla, we lost Michelle this season and it was our CPA chat.

Jhylin :

So, Jyla, we lost Michelle this season. We retired our CPA with Michelle. Cpa chat with Michelle.

Veronica:

Yes, and that's only because Michelle actually retired and Michelle's my second CPA friend under the age of 60, not to tell Michelle's business, but Michelle's young and she retired her whole business. So she said Veronica, I love you, but I'm gonna need a break. I said you know, what, Michelle, I want to be you when I grow up.

Veronica:

So I'm just thankful that she was able to give us two seasons of, you know, cpa chats. We had so many great topics and we're just picking up where Michelle left off by having small biz hot topics with your mom, ebony Sullivan, and those have been so informative. We just aired one about KPIs key performance indicators. My mom was like girl, that's good for personal life too, and it is, you know. We talked about AI. That's been a big buzzword, you know artificial intelligence and. But the key with that we learned is for repetitive things, that you don't necessarily need a personality, you don't need to know any details, but that's really taking over small businesses. So you know, I always like to find out from you because you're putting all of the information together and you always put a great twist on it. It's always. I get excited. Every week.

Veronica:

I'm like I wonder what Jalyn's going to do you know, for this week's show, so I would love for you to share, like what were some of your favorite shows. What type of shows do you usually like when it comes to creating social media and what's been some of the biggest things that you've learned some things. You know that I'm forcing you to stretch a little bit you know, in areas that you didn't necessarily have experience in, but I just know what jowell and I'm like, okay, she's never flew a plane before, but I'm pretty sure if I give her enough time her and the baby can figure it out we'll'll figure it out.

Jhylin :

We're going to put our heads together. So this season my favorite shows are always just the family shows. But I think it's just because I have so much to work with and I can go anywhere with them, so the family editions are always my favorite. But this season I think your show with and it was actually a more recent show with Brandy Mills yes, it did numbers. People really enjoy Brandy, so shout out to Brandy, shout out to Brandy, who always goes viral.

Veronica:

She is a friend of mine and soon to be consulting client and she's actually in my financial tools class currently, and she just published a journal called Women you Are Strong. Face it to Fix it, and I gave Jialin a copy of this also and she's just amazing. So it's one of those easy turners. It's like less than 60 pages, it's informative, but it also allows you to write some notes and to hold yourself accountable. So I'm all for a good read, but that I can also come back and I'm sure I can go back to this journal six months from now, a year from now, and find something different that I can pull out of it. So love Brandy Mills. You mentioned family additions. This season we had the great Dr Reverend. I'm going to add a doctor to it, dr Reverend Tameka Milton, my cousin, who's an amazing singer and has a faith-based business, and I love that. She's showing that, yes, you could be a woman of God, yes, you can provide religious services, but it's still a business.

Jhylin :

Right.

Veronica:

It's still a business, so I love that. And then, of course, every year we have to have Mommy on.

Jhylin :

And she always shows up and shows out honey, mommy gonna come and do what Mommy does, okay, honey.

Veronica:

This year she had a little speech on faith. You know at the end of it. I said okay, and she's competitive too, because her very first show is still well. It got bumped down because Dr Sophia Mitchell bumped her from second place this season to third place. But mommy is always like how many downloads I get? Oh, okay, I have to hype it up some more.

Veronica:

So she'll say the timing of this season. There was a lot going on with deaths in the family and she's making excuses, retirements, things of that sort. But you know, number one v team members shout out to bobby, shout out to darcy.

Jhylin :

Man, she's your number one man, for sure, so yeah.

Veronica:

So what was something, Jylan, that you learned, what was something that I pushed you across? All the things You're doing my newsletter now I'm trying to step it up with TikTok. I still haven't done a video. I'm scared, but you know all of these things you've been pushing me.

Jhylin :

But what have been some things that made you kind of a little out of your comfort zone, but you're glad that you experienced it this season. Just a lot of this video stuff Trying to get us a YouTube going and our TikTok going, thinking outside of the box for just content ideas, what I think people would enjoy. Um, getting me on platforms I haven't used before, I say all the time you and my mom think I'm IT girl and I might be you IT advertising, marketing your brick?

Veronica:

like because I'll keep up, of course, with Cassie Electric's social media, because I know Jialin's over that and it's funny because I'll be talking to your mom and she's like how did you find out about this? I'm like it's on your website, you know it's on your Facebook. She's like oh, Jialin just takes care of it, I'm not even worried about it. But you do such a good job because I'm sure people listening is like oh, an electric company, that's not sexy, but you make it cool, Like I'm always like oh, I wonder what cool little thing that they're going to show on video. If there's any tips, it's family.

Jhylin :

It just makes I would feel like I want to work you know, at Cassie Electric, we are such a energetic family and everybody around us, everyone has such a huge personality, family and everybody around us, everyone has such a huge personality and I don't want to like put everyone's business out there, but it's marketable. You know what I mean. So I always tell everybody just be yourself, show up as you and be authentic. People love that, you know.

Veronica:

Yes, yes, yes, yes. So, with that being said, Jalyn, we always like to provide, you know, the listeners with some tips, some jewels, and you're a self-taught digital media consultant. That's my title I have for you this season. You know, what advice do you give to other creators starting their business? And you know, I always say in these questions what is something you wish somebody told you at the beginning of this journey? Because, yes, you have a background in business, but your trade was, you're a baker, you know, like your food, that's your passion, but you have, you're so good at so many things. So, with being self-taught in this, what advice would you give to those listening?

Jhylin :

Just be confident, don't don't be so. I think with me starting out, I was so timid to try new things or do new things or even speak out in the room, because I am self-taught and I was like there's so much I need to learn, um, but if you're creative, you're doing it already. You know, so don't be, step outside of your comfort zone and do it, but also learn from everything, learn from everybody.

Jhylin :

You know, everything, everything is a is a classroom, everywhere is a classroom, and myself I like to take a lot of the little free, little courses that people offer or, um, use their their creative tricks and hacks and things that I learn on canva.

Jhylin :

Um, you don't have to go to school to be a. To be a master, you just have to want to be, so you'll find those things. Um, what connects with you? Join, join groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. Just don't be afraid to network and ask questions, because I've learned so much from people you wouldn't even expect, or people I don't even know, that I just may ask a question online and people are so open to sharing with you. So don't be afraid to to just ask and put yourself out there.

Veronica:

Yes, and I'm glad that you said have confidence, because having confidence doesn't mean you don't ask questions, you know. Being confident doesn't mean you know all the answers, it just means you say it with your chest. You know, in recent we were struggling with something, you know, trying to post a video on the newsletter, and John just was like V, I can't figure this out. You know, can you reach out to somebody? Can you do that? And I told her I'm so thankful that you stopped and asked, because when I started my career as an auditor, we were charging people by the hour. So our managers always said if it takes you more than 15 to 30 minutes, let me know, because time is money and we cannot just have you spinning your wheels for an hour because you're too timid or you're too nervous that you're going to look stupid which you can never look stupid or make somebody, make the company look bad. You're going to make them look bad if you're spending too much time just trying to figure out. They know you don't know.

Jhylin :

Exactly.

Veronica:

They just want you to ask the right questions to figure it out. So I love that you said have confidence and you're not going to know everything. And network. That's one of the tips that I'm having in one of my upcoming newsletters as a CPA tip is you have to network and you can do that with just wifi at home. You know, because there's so many virtual online networking groups, I just joined a Black CPA, you know, like Facebook group. Then I just joined a CPA group. You know I wanted to get a flavor of both but ultimately I miss having other CPAs that I can bounce. You know, questions off of oh my God, are you and the baby okay? Are you all right? Okay?

Jhylin :

had a little water go down the wrong way, sorry we're checking up with anything jowling does we're like?

Veronica:

are you and the baby?

Jhylin :

okay, it's no more just me, it's no more just me it's past.

Veronica:

At this point you got your last birthday present, your last exactly exactly.

Jhylin :

people call me and they're like can I speak to Drew?

Veronica:

I'm like Drew is unavailable and Jylan's both her name's with a J and baby Drew's name is going to be with a J. I love that. So, before we go, jylan, what do you have in store for the remainder of the year? So for those that are listening, they're probably like OK, jylan is a business owner with this social media digital excellence that you do. You also do that for Cassie Electric, your mom, your grandmother's business and your father's business. So how are you going to balance this? What is the rest of 2024 looking like for you?

Jhylin :

Taking it a little slow the rest of 2024, just trying to get adapted to motherhood. I'll still be working, but just a little slower. I have some new clients lined up for the new year, so I'm really excited about that.

Veronica:

What industry? If you don't mind me asking.

Jhylin :

Real estate and they need that. I'm getting, you know, I'm getting getting heads all over the place, so that's really exciting. I'm really excited about that.

Veronica:

Make sure I go over rates with you. You know your rates be too low Sometimes.

Jhylin :

I'd be telling Shaolin I'd be giving her raises. I'm like what's wrong with you?

Veronica:

Why didn't?

Jhylin :

you make me pay you more. That's part of that confidence thing, girl. I told you I'm like self-taught so I be doubting myself, but people are really like feeling what I have. So, yes, we'll get that on the books. I'm going to need some consulting, but yeah, I'm kind of just chilling for the rest of the year and going to come out swinging at the top of 2025.

Veronica:

Yes, because it's going to be your birthday. We need that body snatched, honey.

Jhylin :

Yes, girl, and I know the baby's going to be healthy.

Veronica:

That baby's going to be working, filing papers, doing social media before she can walk.

Jhylin :

They already got her an assistant electrician shirt. She coming to work. She got boots.

Veronica:

assistant electrician shirt. She coming to work. She got boots.

Jhylin :

We definitely need and those listening.

Veronica:

you can write off your children as employees, so we will make sure we get baby Drew working Well. Jalyn, thank you so much for making time. I know you're starting to get to that point where you're trying to wrap up things. You're down to the last stretch, you know, with the pregnancy and you wear it so well and I'm so proud of you for bringing this beautiful life into the world and I'm excited to spoil. Look, we got that baby so spoiled.

Jhylin :

Yeah, already right.

Veronica:

But thank you for helping me scale up my business. I was very nervous to outsource some of these things. Now I'm just like, oh, this delegation thing is kind of nice.

Jhylin :

You know like yes.

Veronica:
